October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast cancer impacts all of us – our families, our friends, our coworkers, and ourselves. One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Here in Alaska, an estimated 550 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025 alone (according to the American Cancer Society.) And here on the Kenai Peninsula, the need is especially urgent: our region has one of the highest breast cancer incidence rates in Alaska—yet one of the lowest mammogram screening rates. From 2016 to 2022, only 49% of women ages 40+ reported having a mammogram in the previous two years. But there is hope! Thanks to early detection the mortality rate of breast cancer is decreasing across the state.
For KBFPC clients, early detection means annual exams, breast cancer screenings and mammogram referrals, genetic testing for hereditary cancers, diagnostic services, and reliable up-to-date information – all at low- or no-cost for clients who qualify. As a trusted community healthcare partner, and with your help, KBFPC provides evidence-based, empowering reproductive health care regardless of a person’s insurance status or ability to pay.
Each October, our Board of Directors leads a community Breast Cancer Awareness and fundraising campaign, requesting donations from local businesses and KBFPC supporters to display a sponsored pink flag on their building during the month. The funds raised help our not-for-profit clinic continue providing affordable, exceptional sexual and reproductive health care on the Kenai Peninsula.

The pink flags seen around the Kenai Peninsula in October are a reminder of the importance of breast cancer prevention and early detection, and encouragement to schedule your Annual Wellness Visit and ask your provider if you’re up to date on recommended cancer screenings. KBFPC’s Breast Cancer Awareness efforts are also supported in part by the Alaska Run for Women, which contributes to our community outreach and education efforts, and the Alaska Title X and Breast + Cervical (AK B+C) Screening Assistance programs, which help income-eligible clients receive high-quality screening care at low or no cost.
