Friends,
Fall is fully upon us, and as many people are brainstorming costume ideas and pumpkin desserts, all we can think about at KBFPC is breast cancer. Given that 1 in 8 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives, it is evident that this disease affects all of us. I encourage you to take a moment to think about the people in your life who have interacted with breast cancer directly. Where are they now? What have they taught you?
We know that the more people have access to screening and early detection, the fewer lives will be impacted. Earlier this month we hosted the Providence Mobile Imaging Unit at KBFPC, supporting 25+ folks in receiving a mammogram. For many of them, it was their first time. For others, it was part of a well-established routine. Either way, these people showed up for themselves and their loved ones by prioritizing their care, and we are so grateful they did!
Each October KBFPC paints the town pink with the goal of spreading awareness of the pervasiveness of breast cancer, educating the public on current screening guidelines, and encouraging the community to stay up to date on their routine care, including annual wellness visits and mammograms. However, this effort extends far beyond the month of October: KBFPC provides access to breast and cervical cancer screenings and education year-round. See the end of this newsletter for ways to support our work in the new year now.
I hope you’ll take some time this month to educate yourself, connect with a loved one, and schedule your mammogram if applicable.
There is so much going on in October – I look forward to seeing you somewhere along the way.

Sponsor a Pink Flag for your home or business. For each $150 you donate, KBFPC volunteers will hang 1 flag at your homer or business (or deliver it for you to display) and then pick up the flags in early November. The more you donate, the more flags to display!
Parent Corner
Young people spend a lot of their time online. For many of them, it is the first place they go for information on intimate questions like: “how do I tell if someone has a crush on me?” Unfortunately, the world wide web doesn’t always have young people’s best interests in mind.
For example, take the so called “Manosphere” that has been referenced with recent events. Influencers have created this section of the internet to sell products and feed young men specific ideas of masculinity in ways that can be “frequently tied to racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, and in some cases, violent rhetoric” (Mashable).
Because of teens’ easy access to anything online, it is incredibly important to engage in thoughtful conversations around media literacy with young people. Asking open-ended questions that encourage them to consider what they are consuming can help youth develop critical thinking skills.
