Everyone knows someone who needs a mammogram.
Why are mammograms important? According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, people who receive regular screenings for breast cancer have a 26% LOWER breast cancer death rate than people who don’t.
Here on the Kenai Peninsula, the need is especially urgent. Our region has one of the highest breast cancer incidence rates in Alaska—yet one of the lowest mammogram screening rates. From 2016 to 2022, only 49% of women ages 40+ reported having a mammogram in the previous two years. But there is hope! Thanks to early detection the mortality rate of breast cancer is decreasing across our state.
That’s why experts recommend annual mammography starting at age 40, unless your healthcare provider suggests otherwise. A provider referral is not required to receive a screening mammogram, however KBFPC always recommends seeing your healthcare provider at least once a year.

Providence Imaging Center and Breast Cancer Detection Center of Alaska also have mobile mammogram units that bring life-saving screenings to rural areas with less access.
Cost Saving Options
Alaska Breast + Cervical Screening Assistance Program: Covers the cost of mammograms and Pap tests and pays for diagnostic testing if needed. Cash Pay Discounts: Some imaging providers offer a cash-pay or upfront payment discount for clients not using insurance to cover the cost of their care. Ask about this potential discount when scheduling your mammogram appointment.
