Incident at KBFPC

Announcement from our CEO

November 11, 2024: At approximately 5:45am this morning someone drove up to Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic’s administrative and education building on Nielsen Circle (formerly home to the “REC Room”) and shot several rounds of ammunition into the front of the building. Fortunately, no one was onsite at the time because bullets and damage were found throughout the building.

Staff discovered the damage when the workday began, but Homer Police were alerted to gunshots in the area by neighbors on Ben Walters Lane before dawn. Officers began a search for the source of the shots, but were not able to locate the damage until KBFPC staff notified them. Homer Police are actively investigating the incident and ask for anyone with information or additional camera footage to contact 907-235-3150.

For over 40 years, KBFPC has provided reproductive healthcare on the Kenai Peninsula. KBFPC staff and board of directors are deeply saddened by this act of violence against our community, particularly those who are targeted in misinformation campaigns and inflammatory political messaging. KBFPC remains open and staff will continue to implement security measures to protect our community’s access to reproductive healthcare and education.

Second Incident

November 12, 2024: Last night at approximately 6:50pm a second shooting event occurred at Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic. Shots were again fired into the front of KBFPC’s administrative and education building on Nielsen Circle. No one was in the building at the time of the shooting.

Neighbors in the area reported the sound of gunshots to the Homer Police Department (HPD) and officers responded immediately. A suspect is now in custody. An officer, accompanied by KBFPC staff, investigated the scene after the incident. Additional bullets and more damage were found throughout the building.

KBFPC’s staff and Board of Directors appreciate the HPD officers investigating these incidents and the outpouring of community support. KBFPC remains committed to supporting every person’s right to life-affirming reproductive health care and education in Homer, at the flagship clinic and throughout the Kenai Peninsula as part of our Pop-Up Clinic and outreach programs.
