Frequently Asked Questions
These are a few of our clients’ most common questions about our services. Please take a look and contact us if we can help answer yours.
Our providers are contraceptive specialists, and we offer clients a broad range of birth control choices including:
Hormonal and non-hormonal/copper IUDs
Nexplanon implant
Oral contraceptive pills
NuvaRing
DepoProvera injections
Consultations for Fertility Awareness-based methods

Emergency contraception (like Plan B)
All these supplies are available in-stock under our sliding fee scale for clients who qualify, and we can also prescribe Phexxi or the patch method for pickup at a local pharmacy. Pregnancy doesn’t happen right after sex, so it’s still possible to prevent pregnancy for a few days after the fact. Taking emergency contraception (EC) pills like Plan B or Ella after unprotected sex works by delaying your ovulation, or the release of an egg from your ovary, which reduces the likelihood that sperm will encounter an egg to fertilize. The placement of an IUD is also an option to prevent an unplanned pregnancy and provide birth control in the future. All EC methods work better the sooner you can get access and are available at KBFPC as well as over the counter at local pharmacies. You can also purchase Plan B in advance, to have on hand just in case.
Yes, we offer full STI testing and select treatment services by appointment. Not everyone needs comprehensive STI testing, we offer screenings based on individual factors and your provider will have a routine, confidential conversation with you to determine which tests are recommended. Different tests may be performed on a urine sample, a vaginal or oral swab, or by blood. Currently STIs are at an all-time high in the U.S., and the state of Alaska frequently has the greatest case numbers. Many people do not experience any symptoms after an infection, so we recommend scheduling testing as part of your regular healthcare routine to keep yourself and your partners safe.
Yes - in Alaska, all adolescents have the right to confidential sexual and reproductive health care; learn more about your privacy rights here.
KBFPC takes the privacy of all our clients very seriously, and that includes teens seeking care with or without parental involvement. While it can be helpful to have a trusted adult in your life, and we may ask about your ability to share certain things with a parent or guardian, you do not need permission to receive care at KBFPC. Our staff will discuss your concerns and make sure you understand how your information is protected or might be shared, with your consent.
All aspects of your care at KBFPC will be client-centered and trauma-informed. This means we will listen carefully to your needs, personal values, and lived experiences and work with you to make the best healthcare choices for you as an individual. Safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment are the core principles of trauma-informed care, and everyone at KBFPC prioritizes these with all our clients regardless of whether or not you have personally experienced trauma, or feel stress in a medical setting.
Yes, we can bill private insurance plans and we also accept Alaska Medicaid coverage. After your visit, our billing agency will submit your claim, apply any payments or sliding fee scale discounts you qualify for, and you will receive an invoice in the mail if there is any remaining balance to pay. We appreciate prompt payment, but clients are welcome to receive care here regardless of having an account balance. Thank you for choosing KBFPC! By coming to the clinic, you are helping ensure our work and services remain accessible to all.
We’re here for you. As the only Title X-funded clinic in Alaska, KBFPC offers a unique sliding fee scale that can help clients with or without insurance afford high-quality care at low or no cost. Some clients will qualify for a 100% discount. All clients are asked a few income questions once per year to determine eligibility, including your family or household size and your monthly or annual pre-tax income. Anyone with an income amount under the guidelines below would be eligible for a discount at KBFPC. Please call the clinic for more information, 907-235-3436.
Childcare shouldn’t prevent you from keeping your appointment at KBFPC. Your children are welcome at the clinic; we have toys and books in the waiting area. Feel free to mention any concerns when you call to schedule your visit.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a regular medication for people at risk for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV infection from sex or injection drug use.
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication taken to prevent HIV after a possible exposure. PEP must be taken within 72 hours of possible exposure to HIV and should only be used in emergency situations.
You can get a prescription for either medication with a KBFPC provider visit, and pick it up from a local or mail-order pharmacy. Clinic staff can help you learn more about co-pay assistance programs to help cover the prescription cost.
More information about PrEP and PEP can be found via the CDC, or by calling the Clinic.
Yes! We welcome male-bodied clients. In addition to our STI (sexually transmitted infection) prevention, testing, and treatment options for all genders, we also offer Male Wellness visits. A regular check-up is recommended for everyone annually, to discuss your general health & wellbeing, any recommended cancer screenings, and address any concerns. At KBFPC, your visit can also include a discussion of your sexual health and fertility, which can be affected by your overall health – and vice versa! You don't have to wait until there's a problem to see a health care provider.
KBFPC can also provide vasectomy procedures, available on our sliding fee scale.
