Did you catch the moon mission last week? It was extraordinary, and such a valuable reminder as to what a dedicated group of people can accomplish when they organize around a shared goal! I felt similarly looking around the room at our “The Birds & the Bees Ball” adult prom event. The collective energy and commitment to reproductive health on the Kenai Peninsula was palpable. As a longtime staff member of the agency, it felt incredibly supportive to see such a strong community behind our work. Thank you to those who attended, volunteered, and donated; and thank you to everyone for the support near and far.
And yet, a vital Alaskan healthcare partner is closing their doors this month. Earlier this week Identity Inc., an Anchorage-based nonprofit dedicated to serving the LGBTQ+ community since 1977, announced they are closing the Health Clinic. We are deeply saddened by this news. Identity’s advocacy and steadfast care are pillars of our community, and this loss will have an immediate impact on Alaskans’ right to inclusive, affirming healthcare.
At KBFPC, we will continue to cultivate a welcoming and accessible space for everyone to receive the care they deserve.
As we navigate the times ahead as a community, please continue to show up for one another. Check in with your friends, and give some extra grace to your neighbors. We’re all in this together.
Parent Corner
Are the young people in your life familiar with the 988 Lifeline? We know that many young people struggle with mental health these days, and access to support is often challenging. The 988 Lifeline is a free, confidential, 24/7/365 service for mental health support. Whether someone is in crisis or just needs to talk, counselors are available and ready to help. Services are reachable via phone call, text, or chat.
Share information about the 988 Lifeline with your preteens/teens or better yet, call 988 together to learn what the experience is like or review their “What to Expect” page together!
Proactive efforts can help your teen feel more comfortable reaching out if they or a friend need support in the future, and reassure them that you really care about their mental health.
Life Lab
Come join Life Lab for the last two weeks of the school year!
We will be learning about Emotions and Consent. Exploring these topics in early puberty helps students better care for themselves, their health, and their community!
Life Lab is an after school offering for 5 & 6 graders on Wednesdays from 3:00 – 5:00 PM through the end of April.
Understanding Infertility
On Wednesday, April 22nd at SPH’s Wellness Wednesday at the Kachemak Bay Campus join local providers Katie Ostrom, MD, Renae Blanton, FNP, and Robin Holmes, MD in exploring common causes of infertility, current treatment options, and addressing myths and misinformation frequently circulating in social media and popular culture.
Then from 6:30-7:30pm enjoy Tai Chi with Rowan Mulvey – plus free soup and bread from South Peninsula Hospital!

Birds, Bees, and Beyond
Join KBFPC Teen Health for our last “Birds, Bees, & Beyond,” of the school year! This event is designed to support parents/caregivers and connect them with others in their community.
This month we’ll dive into teen marijuana use and share strategies for having conversations with teens!
Our last meetup is on Monday, April 20 from 5:30 – 6:30pm in person at the Kachemak Bay Campus or via Zoom
